From Skills to Work, KMS GENDER FEB UNDIP WAVE Encourages Economic Strengthening of Coastal Women

Demak, August 14, 2026 – Student Groups related to Sustainable Development Goals (KMS GENDER FEB UNDIP) through the WAVE (Women’s Advancement & Value Empowerment) movement carried out women’s capacity building activities with the Kartini Bahari Group in Purworejo Village, Bonang District, Demak Regency. With the tagline “Powerful, Creative, Worldwide”, this activity is part of the efforts of students to encourage coastal women in developing the potential of the household economy sustainably.

The activity began with an introduction session between KMS GENDER FEB UNDIP WAVE students and Kartini Bahari Group members. Furthermore, students delivered material about Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the role of women, and strengthening the household economy of coastal communities. The activity involved Diponegoro University’s undergraduate students in Economics, namely Sabrina Mantika, Kirana Savanadia, Galang Bayu Aji, Kania Asysyifa, Aisyah Raisha Kamila, and Muhammad Bahrul Ilmi, as well as Diponegoro University’s undergraduate and graduate program students.

One of the focus of the activity is to encourage the sustainability of fishery product processing skills that have previously been obtained by the group through a training program from the Service. In this activity, KMS GENDER FEB UNDIP WAVE does not repeat technical training, but presents a simple technology introduction that can support the production and packaging process. Students introduce the utilization of choppers and sealers and demonstrate their use in the product processing process.

Through the session, Kartini Bahari members were invited to see how the utilization of production facilities can help optimize the skills they already have. Discussions were also carried out to explore the product development plan and the utilization of the technology in accordance with the needs of the group.

In the sharing session, Kartini Bahari members conveyed various product ideas that they wanted to develop, including pempek, meatballs, nuggets, cilok, and other processed products. These various ideas show the potential for the development of women’s economic activities based on local fishery products as well as opportunities to increase the added value of products produced by coastal communities.

As part of the sustainability of the program, KMS GENDER FEB UNDIP WAVE also facilitates production support facilities that can be used by the Kartini Bahari Group in product processing and packaging activities. The support is expected to help the group apply the skills they have more optimally and develop productive activities that can benefit the household economy.

This activity supports SDG 5 (Gender Equality) through strengthening the role of women in economic activities, SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) through the development of productive activities and added value of fishery products, SDG 1 (No Poverty) through strengthening household economic resilience, and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) through the utilization of fishery products into value-added products.

Through the spirit of “Powerful, Creative, Global”, KMS GENDER FEB UNDIP WAVE is committed to building collaborations that place women as the main actors in the process of change. This activity is expected to be the first step to develop local potential into a sustainable work, strengthen the household economy, and create a wider impact for coastal communities.
