Dr. Jens Kai Perret Discusses Time Series Analysis and Forecasting Methods in Undip Global Classroom

The Undip Global Classroom program once again featured international lecturers through an online lecture held on Saturday, May 9, 2026. On this occasion, Dr. Jens Kai Perret was the keynote speaker for the Statistics 1 course at Diponegoro University. Dr. Jens, a lecturer in Economics and Statistics at the International School of Management Cologne, Germany, delivered material on Time Series Analysis and Forecasting Methods interactively via Zoom. The event was also attended by the Statistics 1 Course Coordinator, Prof. Indah Susilowati, and moderated by Maulana Ghani Yusuf, a lecturer from the Undip Economics Study Program.

In his presentation, Dr. Jens explained how time series analysis methods can be used to understand patterns and relationships between economic variables over time. One topic that captured the students’ attention was the positive relationship between oil and global gas prices. He stated that rising oil prices are generally followed by rising gas prices, making the current situation a strategic opportunity to start investing in the gas sector before prices increase further. This explanation shows how historical data analysis can help the economic and investment decision-making process in the future.

Furthermore, Dr. Jens also explained cyclical and seasonal patterns in economic data, including Indonesian inflation. He cited the example of inflation in Indonesia tending to increase during certain periods, such as the lead-up to Eid al-Fitr, the new academic year, and the year-end holidays. He explained that these recurring patterns can be analyzed using forecasting methods, resulting in more accurate economic predictions. This explanation also reinforced the material previously presented by Maulana Ghani Yusuf regarding cyclical and seasonal patterns in Indonesian inflation in the previous Statistics 1 lecture.

The event was lively and interactive, with high student enthusiasm during the discussion and question-and-answer session. Students raised various questions regarding the application of time series methods in modern economic analysis, ranging from inflation and energy to market forecasting. Through this Undip Global Classroom, the Faculty of Economics and Business Undip hopes that students will gain international learning experiences while broadening their horizons regarding the application of statistics and data analysis to address the ever-evolving challenges of the global economy.
